Pre-Conference

As a pre-conference, the «International Seminar» takes place September 5-6, 2017. It mainly addresses international guests, particularly groups of school leaders who participate in professional development programs in a range of countries. The focus is on the exchange of knowledge and experiences across countries and the discussion of challenges. Besides the presentation of the Swiss school system(s), participants will get the opportunity to visit the following local schools in the canton of Zug (confirmation of schools pending):

Loretostrasse 10, 6300 Zug, approx. 15 minutes walk on foot from the University

The Secondary School Loreto is a cooperative secondary school which belongs to the urban schools in Zug. The school holds 21 classes of the two levels of secondary schools, which means around 400 pupils and 60 teachers. The school’s programme focuses especially on cooperative learning and uses different methods to achieve this.

Ziegelmattweg 1, 6300 Zug, 5 minutes walk on foot from the University

The S-B-A is a vocational school and a vocational preparation school. It is a school which trains the core values and the professional competence of young adults. It is an optional 10th school year which aims at the preparation for a successful introduction to the vocational education.

Kirchmattstrasse 7, 6300 Zug, just across the University

The primary school Kirchmatt is a modern elementary school with a broad offering. It has classes from 1st to 6th grade and includes the integrative school form ISF, lunch and free time supervision, tutoring by teachers, free time offering: meeting for children, social case work, etc. The primary school Kirchmatt holds around 220 pupils and 30 teachers and remedial teachers as well as a social worker. The school’s programme pays special attention to the strengths of each child and furthermore it focuses on cooperative learning.

Klosterstrasse 4, 6300 Zug, just by the University

This school is a public all-day school, and belongs to the urban schools Zug, attended by 72 pupils in 3 „double classes“ (grade 1 and 2 – grade 3 and 4, and grade 5 and 6.). Two teachers are in charge of one of these „double classes“ in terms of classroom teaching and mentoring.

Lüssiweg 24, 6300 Zug, approx. 15-20 minutes walk on foot from the University

The High School of the Canton of Zug is a large and modern school in the centre of Zug with 1620 students, 84 classes and 217 teachers. If a student chooses Gymnasium immediately after primary school (at about the age of 13), she or he would attend this school for six years. The Gymnasium leads to the so called federal graduation diploma (“Eidgenössische Matura”) which is recognized by all universities in Switzerland and most universities abroad.

Baarerstrasse 100, 6302 Zug, approx. 15-20 minutes walk on foot from the University

Vocational education combined with training in the industry allows young adults to make the transition into the working environment and ensures that there will be enough qualified staff in the future. Depending on the profession, basic vocational education and training takes two to four years. It leads to a basic or advanced federal certificate, which provides the necessary qualifications for practicing a specific profession. In a modern building, the training facilities, the service centre as well as the educational centre, procure and support sustainably professional and individual skills.

Bundesstrasse 15, 6300 Zug, approx. 15 minutes walk on foot from the University

The private day school Talentia is recognized by the canton as providing education to highly gifted elementary school children. Full support taking into account individual abilities and interests is one of the school’s main goals. Classes of 12 children at most permit individual schooling. In a stimulating learning environment, the specially trained teaching staff pays special attention to bringing out the full capabilities of the children in terms of personal, social and subject skills.
